Confirm Tartan Artwork and Repeat Size

Check that the artwork is complete, commercially usable and identified by a clear version name. State the physical repeat dimensions and colour reference. If the factory is developing a repeat from a reference, treat the first artwork or textile proof as a proposal until it has written approval.

Can a manufacturer use a brand’s own tartan artwork? Yes, provided the buyer supplies or approves production-ready artwork and holds the necessary commercial rights. The sample should confirm how that artwork translates to the chosen textile.

Review Textile Weight and Hand Feel

A textile that drapes well on a soft pouch may need backing or reinforcement for a commuter tote. Ask for the material composition and available specification, then handle the physical swatch. Weight, weave, surface texture and fraying behaviour all influence cutting and construction.

Do not assume terms such as Scottish wool, waterproof or certified performance without documentation and relevant testing. Until the material is confirmed, tartan textile or textile panels are the accurate descriptions.

Mark Pattern Placement Before Cutting

Decide which stripe or check should sit at the centre of the front, whether a flap should follow the body direction and which seams deserve matching. Curved shapes, darts and gussets can interrupt a grid. A marked panel map gives the cutter priorities instead of an unrealistic instruction to match everything.

The approved sample record should include photographs of the pattern position and the direction of important pieces. That evidence is more precise than a note saying only ‘same as sample’.

Set Trim, Edge Finish and Hardware Colour

Confirm whether the structure uses leather-look trim, textile binding or another trim material option. Review thickness at folded edges, piping, handle bases and corners. Edge paint, turned edges and binding produce different visual and wear characteristics.

Place the intended hardware finish beside the textile. Metal colour affects the range’s visual temperature, and surface finishes can look different under retail lighting. Confirm the zipper, clasp, turn-lock, feet and logo hardware as a coordinated group where possible.

Test Strap Construction and Pocket Layout

Specify handle drop, strap adjustment range, attachment method and reinforcement. A photograph may explain appearance, but dimensions and intended load are needed to assess function. Check how the strap sits when the bag is empty and when it carries the expected contents.

Pocket decisions should be practical: opening width, device or document size, zipper direction and access while the bag is worn. For a commuter tote, a laptop sleeve remains an option until its dimensions and protection requirements are confirmed.

Approve the Logo Method and Packaging

Logo size and position should be judged against the tartan, not on a blank drawing. A metal logo may compete with a strong check; a woven label or restrained patch may suit another direction. Supply vector artwork and identify any minimum clear space.

Packaging protects both the product and the approved presentation. Confirm tissue, hardware protection, dust bag, hangtag, retail box or sleeve as required. Claims and care wording should relate to the actual selected materials.

Create a Sample Approval Record

What should a buyer confirm before sampling? At minimum: artwork version, repeat size, textile reference, trim, dimensions, panel placement, hardware, strap, pockets, logo and packaging. Mark which details are confirmed facts, which are common production proposals and which are optional customisations.

After review, record every accepted point and every change required for the next sample or pre-production reference. MOQ, price, lead time and optional RFID-blocking construction remain project-specific; RFID performance should not be claimed unless the selected construction is defined and verified.
